When fighting for our independence, we are all brothers and sisters. Regardless however, without structure, this rebellion would collapse in on itself. It is because of this, that her majesty Queen Luna has devised this ranking system.
In order of lowest to highest rank:
City Guard: Completely separate from the rest of the Lunar forces, the city guard are stationed as garrison troops in settlements and forts. Their primary duty is to defend Lunar territory, and police the population.
A typical unit of Lunar city guard.
Thrall: a new recruit, also known as a Thrall, is the first and most junior rank in the Lunar Empire's military forces. As they are unproven, their combat ability is varied. Some are talented fighters, while others are children who are in over their heads. They must provide their own weapons and armor at first, before being promoted to Fri-Hals. Because of this, Thralls could be seen wielding practically anything, from proper swords and armor, to farming tools.
A group of eager young Thralls, looking to prove themselves.
Fri-hals: Once a Thrall proves him/herself as a competent warrior and a comrade who can be trusted, they are promoted to Fri-hal. The Fri-hal is the backbone of the Lunar army, and the most common rank amongst the soldiers. Brothers and sisters in arms. A Fri-hal is most likely seen wielding a spear, a heavy round wooden shield, and his choice of a sword or a one handed axe. Their armor is comprised of leather, animal hides, chainmail and iron helms.
Two Lunar Fri-Hal Soldiers, ready to fight for their queen.
Drengr: Drengr are the elite shocktroopers of the Lunar army. Strong, swift and brave, only the best fighters amongst the Fri-hal are given the honor of being called Drengr. A Drengr has earned the right to take whatever weapons and armor they wish from the armories, save for the equipment set aside for officers. Because of this, a Drengr is almost always wearing better and heavier armor than their Fri-Hal counterparts. A typical Drengr could be seen using anything from a basic spear and shield, to a two handed war axe.
The Drengr are the most battle tested amongst the Lunar forces, and strike fear into their foes.
Thegn: When a Fri-hal or a Drengr start to show signs of leadership potential, they are often promoted to Thegn. To a Thegn, the mind is more important than the body, as these men and women are responsible for leading troops, and devising strategy.
Rarely seen on the front lines, a Thegn's primary duty is to plan out ambushes, and coordinate soldiers.
Jarl: A Jarl is the Thegn of Thegn. When the Thegn look for orders, they will likely come from the mouth of a Jarl. Only the most battle tested Thegn have the right to call themselves Jarls.
A Jarl is a brilliant tactical mind above all, though they are also known as fierce warriors.
Huscarl: While a Huscarl has no real authority over other troops, a Huscarl is charged with the vital task of being bodyguards to high ranking officials, such as Jarls, Knights or even the Queen. Only the bravest, most skilled and most loyal will even be considered for such a position. A highly respected position, as the lives of the most important men and women in the Empire are trusted to them.
A Huscarl is expected to lay his or her own life down to protect their charge, and all of their possessions.
Knight: A Knight is the highest military rank one could hope to achieve in the Lunar military forces. The only way to possibly achieve this rank, is to be personally knighted by Queen Luna herself. Knights answer to nobody, save for the Queen. The most sought after military position available, young boys grown up with dreams of being knighted. Out of the hundreds who attempt to gain a knighthood, only a very small handful of them ever do. Those who are knighted are the creme of the crop, the absolute pinnacle of the Empires warriors. A Knight is often given command over a garrison of men, a fort, or even an battle ready army when the Queen cannot lead them herself.
Wearing the best armor that bits can buy, utilizing the most masterfully forged weaponry and often on horseback, a knight is an unstoppable force on the field of battle.
Queen: Queen Luna, the night mother. The commander and chief of the entire New Lunar Empire.
